Wayne County Public Schools Celebrates Final Solar Panel Installation At Grantham & Spring Creek Middle Schools on Wednesday, May 20th

On May 20th, 2015 Wayne County Public Schools, Metcon/TA Loving and SFL+a Architects hosted a celebration to commemorate the final solar panel installation at Grantham Middle School and Spring Creek Middle School. Attendees  had the opportunity to tour the school and see the work completed since construction began in July 2014. The schools will be energy-positive facilities, designed to return more energy to the grid than they consume.  

Innovative features in each middle school include large photovoltaic and geothermal heating and cooling systems, LED lighting, dynamic air cleaning system, spray foam insulation, advanced building automation systems, and solar panels.

ABOUT WAYNE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS:

Wayne County Public Schools, located in southeastern North Carolina, is the twenty-first largest district of 115 public school districts in North Carolina. It has approximately 3,000 employees and approximately 19,300 students grades Pre-K – 13.  With Grantham Middle and Spring Creek Middle being completed this summer, the district will start the 2015-2016 school year with 33 schools. 

 

Grantham Middle School

Located in Goldsboro, NC, Grantham Middle School consist of a 86,346 square foot, single story building with 24 state of the art classrooms, athletic complex - including a football, soccer, baseball, and softball field. It is comprised of load-bearing masonry, bar joist structure, brick veneer, aluminum windows, TPO roof, with typical MS finishes. The building is dried in and finishes are underway, access will be from Hwy 13 and Loop Rd. The building, along with its sister middle school Spring Creek, will be the second and third Net positive schools in the nation. Producing roughly 35% more electricity than the building uses is accomplished by 2,000+ solar panels mounted on the roof. Geothermal wells provide the heating and cooling needs for the building and round out the cutting edge design. 

 

 

Spring Creek Middle School

Located in Goldsboro, NC, Spring Creek Middle School is a 95,946 square foot, single story building with 32 state of the art classrooms, athletic complex - including a football, soccer, baseball, and softball fields. It includes load-bearing masonry, sprinkled, bar joist structure, brick veneer, aluminum windows, TPO roof, with typical MS finishes. The building is dried in and finishes are underway, access will be from Park Road, near intersection with NC 111 and Indian Springs Rd. The building, along with its sister middle school Grantham, will be the second and third Net positive schools in the nation. Producing roughly 35% more electricity than the building uses is accomplished by 2,000+ solar panels mounted on the roof. Geothermal wells provide the heating and cooling needs for the building and round out the cutting edge design.
